In 2020 the Tree of New America started out as a film arts project which sought to document the sculpting of a 20 foot tall tree carved from wood collected from every state tree in the union. In 2021 the Tree of New America found its voice and transitioned into an advocacy project that told inspiring stories of hope. In 2025 the Tree of New America found its lane as an advocate for food sustainability. Today the Tree of New America works with permanent & temporary supportive housing managers to addresses the mental health and wellness of their residents through nutrition by facilitating MKP MobilePop-Up food pantries.

Our mission
TONA addresses the critical link between mental health and nutrition within permanent and temporary supportive housing. Our mission is to combat food insecurity, ensuring residents have consistent equitable access to nutritious food while fostering improved mental and physical well-being.
Our process
We identify the need and facilitate the solution by working directly with permanent and temporary supportive housing managers to address food insecurity among their residents. Many residents face transportation barriers that make accessing food a challenge. We collaborate with housing managers to develop customized strategies tailored to each property’s unique situation.
Our Core strategy & alignment with key legislations
- At the heart of TONA's operation is a strategic connection. TONA's facilitation model ensures that permanent and temporary supportive housing communities facing food insecurity receive reliable and high-quality nutritional support. This collaborative approach is the foundation of our program's success.
- Driven by California's Senate Bill 1383, TONA prioritizes the recovery of edible food. This crucial legislation guides our partnerships with food recovery organizations, ensuring a consistent flow of nutritious food to support the well-being of residents within supportive housing communities.
- Furthermore, we recognize the importance of California's Senate Bill 1380 and its Housing First approach. By providing consistent access to nutritious food, TONA supports the foundational stability that this approach aims to achieve. Food security is a critical component of overall well-being, and our services directly contribute to creating a supportive environment for residents as they establish stable housing.
